Ibiza y Formentera Archeological Museum- Dalt Vila

A historic building housing artefacts dating back thousands of years

If you want to discover the origins and eventful history of the city of Ibiza, you must head up to its highest point, where the castle – now the Parador de Ibiza – the bishop’s residence, the Curia building, the bastion, the Cathedral of Santa María and the Dalt Vila branch of the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera are all situated.

Founded in 1907, its collection was built up from the artefacts gathered by the Ebusitan Archaeological Society during excavations carried out at various sites across Ibiza and Formentera, mainly at the necropolis sites of Sa Barda, Ses Torres and Puig des Molins – where the MAEF’s other branch is located – and at the sanctuaries of S’Illa Plana and Es Culleram.

The building itself also reflects different periods in the city’s history, as it comprises the former Chapel of San Salvador (14th century), the former University of Ibiza (14th century), the Chapel of the Joans (16th century) and the Santa Tecla bastion (17th century), part of the Renaissance fortifications.
