A cave dedicated to the goddess Tanit
A pine forest surrounds the grotto that, between the 5th and 2nd centuries B.C., housed a Punic sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Tanit, the Phoenician deity associated with fertility, protection, and war. This place of worship was located in the north of the island, near Cala Sant Vicent, and its discovery in 1907 revealed more than 600 terracotta figurines and other votive objects, as well as a valuable tablet that also mentions Reseph-Melkart, a sea god who protected sailors and trade. If you’d like to explore the spiritual world of the Punics, we recommend visiting during opening hours—otherwise, you won’t be able to enter the grotto—and complementing this visit with a trip to the Puig de Molins Monographic Museum, where you can admire some of the artifacts found here.
A tip: In the summer, visit first thing in the morning and then enjoy a day at the beach in nearby Cala Sant Vicent.
