One of the country’s oldest avant-garde art galleries
In the heart of Dalt Vila, just a few metres from the lively Plaza de Vila, lies one of Spain’s oldest contemporary art museums. Opened in 1969 in a former 18th-century military building, its interior combines avant-garde art with an archaeological site featuring Phoenician-Punic, Roman and Islamic remains, making this space all the more unique.
If you’re into contemporary art, make sure to include the MACE in your plans and don’t miss its permanent exhibition, which features award-winning works from the historic Ibiza Biennial, Japanese prints from the Ibizagráfic Biennial, drawings by Marí Ribas “Portmany” and the poster collection assembled by gallery owner and cultural promoter Carl van der Voort. Some of the artists you’ll find in its galleries include Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, Luis Gordillo, Erwin Bechtold, Erwin Broner, Eduard Micus, Will Faber, Raoul Hausmann and Tur Costa, amongst others.
