Rationalist architecture overlooking the sea
In the town of Ibiza, at the eastern end of the seaside neighbourhood of Sa Penya, stands the most representative work on the island by the German architect and painter Erwin Broner: a single-family home in the rationalist style that incorporates elements of traditional Ibizan architecture into its design. Designated a Site of Cultural Interest in the ‘Monument’ category, it was designed in 1960 and lived in by Broner himself and his wife until she donated it to the city.
The sound of the sea, the light and the panoramic views over the islets and Formentera take centre stage in the house, and a visit will allow you to explore the various spaces spread across its two floors: a living-dining room with an open-plan kitchen, a bedroom, a study, a terrace, a garden and a roof terrace. Also on display are pieces of furniture designed by Broner himself, as well as drawings, paintings and personal effects.
If you’re interested in architecture and interior design, you simply must visit this outstanding project by Erwin Broner, who, due to his Jewish heritage, first arrived on the island in the 1930s, fleeing Hitler’s Germany.
