Death and the Afterlife in Ancient Ibiza

With over 3,000 recorded hypogea, the hill of Puig des Molins is home to the best-preserved and most extensive Phoenician-Punic necropolis in the Western Mediterranean, which is listed as a Historic-Artistic Monument and a World Heritage Site within the “Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture” site.

Delve into the spirituality of the founders of the island’s capital and discover their funeral customs by visiting the La Mula hypogea – the only ones open to the public – and the permanent exhibition at the Puig des Molins Monographic Museum, which showcases the history of the site and the most significant archaeological finds discovered there, such as amulets, jewellery and pottery, which shed light on Phoenician, Punic and Roman burials, from the preparation of the body to the cult of the afterlife and funerals.  A tip?: In summer, visit the site first thing in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day.
