Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta

Sant Josep de sa Talaia

A glimpse into the origins of Phoenician Ibiza

In the south of the island, next to Es Bol Nou beach and the natural harbour of Sa Caleta, the archaeological remains of Ibiza’s first Phoenician settlement—founded in the mid-7th century BC—await you. During the visit, through reconstructions, information panels, virtual content and an outdoor trail, you’ll discover what life was like for its inhabitants: from how they built their houses or worked with metal to what crops they grew, how they produced the prized purple dye, what navigation systems they used and other fascinating facts.

And from the Phoenician past, jump straight to the 20th century! A visit to the Sa Caleta Interpretation Centre also offers a tour of the military installations built in 1941 during the Second World War: the barracks – the space where the exhibition centre is now located – the anti-aircraft batteries, the sentry box, the trenches and the machine-gun nests. Undoubtedly a fascinating journey through time, available in different languages thanks to the QR codes you’ll find during your visit.

A tip?: Whether it’s winter or summer, combine this visit with a trip to the nearby Cala Jondal beach.
