Understanding the value of one of Ibiza’s most protected areas
The mountainous arc that runs along the north of the island from the rugged coastline of Sant Antoni de Portmany to Sant Carles is known as Es Amunts, a natural treasure spanning 15,000 hectares that you can explore via walking trails or by visiting this visitor centre located in Sant Llorenç de Balàfia.
Built from stone and glass, inside you’ll discover its environmental, geographical and cultural significance, from its waterways to its cliffs and forests. You’ll learn about the birds that nest in the special protection areas, the value of its flora and fauna, and discover interesting facts about traditional architecture and the ways in which Ibizan farmers once used these natural spaces.
A tip? Take a short walk of just over a kilometre to the village of Balàfia, which connects the interpretation centre with the church of Sant Llorenç, the Can Pere Mosson defence tower – an excellent example of a traditional Ibizan house – and the village itself.
