Discover our history through Ibiza's museums

Ibiza isn't just sun and sand. It's also memory, tradition, and heritage.

Through its museums and interpretation centers, you can delve into centuries of history that have shaped this magical island...

We'd like to invite you to these essential spaces that tell the story of Ibiza's past from different angles.

Ibiza and Formentera Archaeological Museum: two locations to understand three thousand years of history

The Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera (MAEF) is the main reference for understanding the ancient history of the Pitiusas.

It preserves, researches, and exhibits the material remains that narrate more than three thousand years of evolution, from the first settlers to the Catalan conquest of 1235. It has two locations, both in Ibiza Town.

The Dalt Vila location, located in Cathedral Square, is surrounded by historical monuments such as the Castle and the Church of Santa María. Its collection includes outstanding pieces from the Phoenician, Punic, Roman, and Islamic periods, perfectly contextualized for the visitor.

The second location, the Puig des Molins Monographic Museum, is located within the Phoenician necropolis of the same name; it acts as an interpretation center for the site and exhibits funerary trousseaus, sculptures, and ritual objects that reflect the beliefs of the ancient world.

Together, both locations offer a comprehensive, rigorous, and fascinating overview of the archaeological past of Ibiza and Formentera.

The interpretation centers spread across the island allow you to discover Ibiza from different cultural and natural perspectives.

In Santa Eulària, Can Planetes – River Interpretation Center explains the importance of the only river in the Balearic Islands in the agricultural and domestic life of the area, with a restored old waterwheel as its centerpiece.

In Ibiza, the recently reopened Sa Capelleta Interpretation Center exhibits a site with Punic remains, a Roman necropolis, and a suburb Islamic outside the walls. Its archaeological value allows us to understand the urban evolution of the city over the centuries.

In the north of the island, the Es Amunts Interpretation Center, in Sant Llorenç de Balàfia, gives voice to the biodiversity and rural tradition of one of the wildest and most authentic areas of Ibiza.

Meanwhile, the Madina Yabisa Center, located in Dalt Vila, offers a digital and immersive look at the island's Muslim period, combining archaeological remains with interactive technology.

These These spaces, although smaller than traditional museums, offer a very intimate experience, designed for learning while enjoying themselves.

Ethnographic Museum of Ibiza

The Ethnographic Museum of Ibiza preserves the living memory of the island through two locations that showcase different facets of Ibiza's cultural and rural heritage.

The first, located in Can Ros, in Santa Eulària des Riu, is a traditional farmhouse converted into a museum space.

Inside, costumes, tools, household objects, and everything you need to understand what daily life was like in Ibiza before tourism are on display.

The second location is located in Ses Païsses de Cala d’Hort, in the municipality of Sant Josep.

This extensive rural complex includes a historic farmhouse (Can Sorà) and an archaeological site with Punic, Roman, and Byzantine remains, including a necropolis and an agricultural building with an olive oil mill and winery.

The surroundings, in both cases, are characterized by dry crops and ethnological elements such as cisterns and corrals, connecting landscape, history, and architecture.

Both complementary venues offer an in-depth look into the soul of the island, from its most ancient origins to its most deeply rooted traditions.
