Art, culture, leisure and gastronomy in the island’s capital
History and modernity come together in this city, founded by the Phoenicians 27 centuries ago. Today, the capital of the Ibizans, known as ‘Vila’, is the municipality where most of the island’s cultural and social activities take place throughout the year, offering an interesting range of gastronomic and leisure options. Dominated by its Renaissance citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic city stretches down to the harbour through the waterfront neighbourhoods of La Marina and Sa Penya, whose narrow streets are brimming with restaurants, terraces, bars and shops.
What to see in Eivissa
The island’s summer capital is an open, ever-vibrant city, with its colourful street markets, diverse people and creative mix of voices, scents and rhythms. Whichever way you start your stroll, you’ll inevitably pass through the Renaissance walls to enter Dalt Vila, where charming narrow streets await, along with places to discover the city’s history and artistic heritage, such as the Cathedral of Santa María, the bastions of Sant Jaume and Sant Pere, the Madina Yabisa Interpretation Centre, the Santa Faç museum complex, the Diocesan Museum, the Puget Museum and the Ibiza Museum of Contemporary Art.
Outside the city walls, the cultural trail continues at the Puig des Molins museum and necropolis, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the Sa Capelleta visitor centre and Casa Broner, amongst other sites. And if you’d like to include a stop by the sea, within the municipality you’ll find the beaches of Talamanca, Ses Figueretes and Playa d’en Bossa (the latter shared with the municipality of Sant Josep)
A tip? On summer evenings, head to the Passeig Maritim neighbourhood, situated on the other side of the bay, with restaurants open in its marinas and world-class entertainment venues.
