A cosmopolitan town in the center of the island
Until just a few decades ago, Santa Gertrudis was just another example of the rural parishes created in the late 18th century by Ibiza’s first bishop, Manuel Abad y Lasierra, with the aim of attracting the Ibizan population, which had traditionally lived in scattered communities and in a self-sufficient manner. Today, it is home to sophisticated restaurants, traditional bars, boutiques, and galleries lining its pleasant pedestrian zone. Whether by day or night, in winter or summer, be sure to include Santa Gertrudis in your Ibiza vacation!
What to See in Santa Gertrudis
Located in the geographical center of the island, this village—part of the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu—stands out for its distinctly cosmopolitan atmosphere centered around the Church of Santa Gertrudis. The church, the town’s main landmark, retains the typical features of Ibizan churches and is notable for having the largest bell gable on the island.
After visiting the church and admiring the sculpture of Manuel Abad y Lasierra—created by Ibizan sculptor Pedro Juan Hormigo—which stands next to the church, you can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Santa Gertrudis on the terraces of the plaza or discover unique items in its shops: handmade jewelry, leather goods, home decor, fashion, accessories, design…
A tip: From June through September, don’t miss the night market held in the square on Fridays starting at 7:00 p.m.
