Church of Santa Inés

A haven of tranquility surrounded by almond trees

Construction of this simple, welcoming church began in 1786 and it was dedicated to Saint Agnes (Santa Agnès in Catalan) due to the long-standing devotion the residents of the Corona plain had for her. On your journeys through the calmest and most timeless parts of Ibiza, don’t forget to visit it! Especially if you’re on the island between January and February, when the almond trees growing in the valley are in bloom and the church’s main festival (January 21) is celebrated.
The building, featuring a single nave covered by a low vault and six side chapels, has two interesting features. The first is its height, which makes it the lowest church on the island. According to popular belief, this unique feature was the result of a competition with the residents of the Sant Mateu Valley to see which church would be completed first. The second interesting feature is that it has two entrance doors despite its small size. Legend has it that the open entrance on the west facade came about after a crime occurred in 1870 near the main door located under the portico, which parishioners refused to pass through again out of superstition.
