A beautiful example of Ibizan architecture
This church is located in one of the least-traveled areas of the island and is the first to welcome you to northern Ibiza, provided you take a detour off the Sant Joan highway to visit it. Built in the 18th century atop a promontory, it is characterized by its massive appearance and its porxo, which is accessed exclusively through a single archway.
The Church of San Lorenzo was built in this location due to its proximity to the village of Balàfia, inhabited since the Middle Ages, and with the same goal of putting an end to the dispersion of the Ibizan population—a goal promoted by Bishop Abad i Lasierra upon his arrival in 1783. It is a single-nave church with a Latin cross plan, a barrel vault, and seven side chapels. Inside, take note of the glazed ceramic tile baseboard.
A recommendation? If you want to see it on its most festive day, visit on August 10, the feast day of Saint Lawrence the Martyr.
