A stop and a rest on the way north
This church is an excellent example of how, in Ibiza, churches built in the 18th century retained their defensive appearance even though pirate attacks had ceased long before. On the way to the beaches of north-eastern Ibiza, the church of San Carlos is yet another reason to stop off in the lively little village of the same name.
With a rectangular floor plan, a gabled roof, a barrel vault and seven chapels, the church’s exterior features a modest bell gable, offset to the left, and a two-aisled portico or ‘porxo’ with three external arches, which stands out as one of the widest on the island. If you’re a fan of classical music, you’ll be interested to know that the International Piano Festival is held here every two years.
