A whitewashed church in the middle of a crossroads
Situated halfway between Portmany Bay, the south of the island and the town of Ibiza, the church of San José was built in the early 18th century to meet the religious needs of the local farming community, who at that time had to travel all the way to San Antonio. Today, its façade greets you on your way to the most beautiful beaches in this part of the island. Shall we go in?
The church of San José follows the robust architectural style typical of traditional Ibizan churches, although by the time it was built, this defensive character was no longer necessary. It consists of a single nave covered by a barrel vault supported by five arches, side chapels and an external portico with three arches and a Calvary. Inside, take a look at the wooden pulpit featuring depictions of the Mysteries (18th century). We recommend you admire its beautiful façade from the nearby cafés and visit it on 19 March, the feast day of its patron saint, if you happen to be visiting Ibiza.
Did you know? It is the only church in Ibiza to feature a sundial on its façade.
