The 7 imposing defense towers of Ibiza

Before Ibiza became a global tourist destination, it was a vulnerable island, exposed to pirate attacks that threatened its coast and its population.

For protection, a system of defense towers was built between the 16th and 18th centuries, strategically located at the most sensitive points along the coast. These watchtowers not only kept watch over the sea but also served to communicate with each other through smoke or fire signals.

Southern towers: between salt flats and sea gates

torre de ses portes ibiza

In the south of the island, we find two strategic towers. The Torre de ses Portes, located between Es Cavallet and Ses Salines, guarded the passage between Ibiza and Formentera. It had three cannons ready to fire at enemy ships, and today it can be visited via a route that crosses the Ses Salines Natural Park. The views of the sea and the surrounding wildlife from this Ibiza defense tower make the walk a doubly enriching experience.

Very close by, at the end of Platja d’en Bossa, stands the Torre des Carregador, one of the oldest, built in the 16th century to protect salt mine workers. With capacity for more than 150 people and two reinforced floors, it served as a refuge and defense for centuries. It has now been restored and can be visited during the summer months.

West and Southwest Towers: the most popular and photogenic

torre den rovira ibiza

On the west coast, we find some of the most visited towers. The Torre d’en Rovira, also called Torre de Comte, rises between Cala Bassa and Cala Comte. Its large size made it a key piece of the defensive system of the port of Sant Antoni, from where it controlled the nearby islets. Today, it can be visited on a short walk from both coves.

The star of the southwest is undoubtedly the Torre des Savinar, or Pirate's Tower, opposite Es Vedrà. This Ibizan defense tower is a place steeped in magic and mystery, perfect for a sunset excursion. Although it was never armed, its location and views have made it legendary. Direct access to the tower is currently completely prohibited, but we encourage you to enjoy the view from a distance.

North and East Towers: Guardians of the Horizon

In the north, the Torre des Molar stands out, also known as Torre de Sant Miquel or Torre de Balansat. Rising 95 meters above the sea and with three floors, it is one of the best-preserved towers. You can access it from the Port de Sant Miquel and enjoy spectacular views of s’Illa Murada and the rugged coastline.

Further east, the Torre d’en Valls watched over the Tagomago canal. Although it was destroyed by the explosion of its gunpowder reserve, it was rebuilt in the 1980s. It can still be easily visited from Cala Boix or Canal d'en Martí, walking among junipers and peaceful landscapes.

Finally, at the northern end, is the Torre de Portinatx, on a 45-meter cliff. Built in 1763, it was used exclusively for surveillance, with a staircase leading to the second floor. To reach this Ibiza defense tower, simply follow the Camí de Sa Torre from the road that leads to S'Arenal Petit. It's a spectacular and uncrowded spot, ideal for a unique getaway.
