| Fomento | News

Four years ago, Ibiza Art Week was born around the fair. Today, June has become the month of contemporary creation, with exhibitions across the island and the fourth edition of the fair set to take place at the end of the month.

CAN, Contemporary Art Now, will be held at FECOEV Ibiza from June 25 to 29. It will host both national and international artists and galleries, showcasing the latest trends in contemporary art.

It’s now official: there is no summer in the Pityusic Islands without CAN Ibiza Art Fair. Once again, the fair will transform Ibiza into the epicenter of contemporary art. A meeting point for artists, collectors, and art lovers alike, from around the globe, all eager to experience an art-filled summer with a Mediterranean spirit. “CAN Ibiza Art Fair is a place to soak in contemporary art, but also to enjoy the sea and sun of the island. It brings together the best of both worlds,” says Sergio Sancho, founder and director of the fair.

CAN, Contemporary Art Now, will celebrate its fourth edition from June 25 to 29 at FECOEV in Ibiza, with a wide selection of national and international galleries. Familiar names include Ruttkowski;68 (Düsseldorf, Bochum, Paris, New York), Gathering (London, Cologne, Ibiza), VETA by Fer Francés (Madrid), HAGD Contemporary (Aalborg), Enari Gallery (Amsterdam), Marian Cramer Projects (Amsterdam), Osnova Gallery (Moscow and Valencia), Valerius Gallery (Luxembourg), and Anna Zorina Gallery (New York).

Joining them are Galería Pelaires (Mallorca), Future Gallery (Berlin), KANT (Copenhagen), 193 Gallery (Paris), SUN.CONTEMPORARY (Bali), 523 Gallery (New York), LA BIBI + REUS (Mallorca), Barbé (Ghent), C+N Gallery CANEPANERI (Geneva and Milan), Herrero de Tejada (Madrid), Kevin Kavanagh (Dublin), MARC BIBILONI (Madrid), 1 MIRAMADRID / 2MIRAARCHIV (Madrid), NIL GALLERY (Paris), Nino Mier (New York and Brussels), Pizza Gallery (Antwerp, Belgium), Rafael Pérez Hernando (Madrid), Gallery Rosenfeld (London), Secetur Privé (London), Tönnheim Gallery (Madrid), Tube Gallery (Palma de Mallorca), and Sorondo Projects (Barcelona), who will participate for the first time.

Regarding the gallery selection, Sergio Sancho comments: “We are very proud that those who have participated before want to return to the CAN Ibiza Art Fair adventure. Moreover, we believe that this year’s new additions help us reinforce our international focus and clearly express our commitment to the local scene.”

 Painting reigns, but...

“For a fair in which painting plays such a central role, we present a wide selection of artists who don’t work in that format,” explains Saša Bogojev, curator of the fair. Among the creators working beyond the canvas, Bogojev highlights “Delphine Dénéréaz’s textiles and installations, Line Munch’s ceramics, Dimitris Tampakis’s post-humanoid sculptures, and Shuyi Cao’s installations and video works...”.

Beyond the official program: a month of art across the island

As a new feature, CAN Ibiza Art Fair brings forward its OFF Program, starting May 30 and running through the first days of July.

Thanks to sponsorship from Paya Hotels, this initiative gives greater prominence to the Balearic art scene and creators working from the islands. Five iconic locations across the Pityusic Islands will host this year’s route: Faro de Ses Coves Blanques, the air-raid shelter in Santa Eulària des Riu, Sa Punta des Molí, Es Polvorí, and Blanco Hotel Formentera. These venues will showcase works by island-based artists Adrián Martínez, Guillermo Fornes, Alba Suau, Adrià Mayordomo, Samuel Almansa, and Joan Canyelles.

“Every year, the OFF Program becomes our tribute to the Pityusic Islands and, in particular, to their increasingly rich artistic scene,” admits Sergio Sancho. “We want the fair to go beyond its walls and for all the island’s public to participate in this celebration of art.”

Design and public art sneak into CAN Ibiza Art Fair

Within the Public Art Program, The Owl, a work by Stefan Strumbel –represented by Ruttkowski;68– will be exhibited on the Passeig de Vara del Rey. On view from June 19 to September, it is a large-scale bronze sculpture of an owl perched on a pinecone. The piece pays tribute to nature and cuckoo clocks, which reference both the passage of time and a sense of home. Additionally, the owl symbolizes wisdom, the night, and the perception of the hidden.

Through the CAN Local program, the fair collaborates with local institutions and galleries that will also present special programming during the event. This year’s highlights include the Ibiza Museum of Contemporary Art (MACE), presenting Miquel Barceló: El present permanent, and Fundación Nave Salinas, with an exhibition by Spencer Lewis. Also participating are venues like Estudi Tur Costa, showing work by Erwin Bechtold and Franco Monti, and Estudio Laterna, with a collective exhibition including Ramon Enrich, Enrich.R, and Isidre Enrich, among others.

One of this edition’s new features is CAN DESIGN, a space within the fair itself dedicated to proposals focused on design and decoration. Participants include Ibiza-based spaces such as Galería Tambien, Soleille Gallery, and Eclecticó Studio, as well as LA Studio from Madrid. “With CAN DESIGN we want to broaden horizons, embracing new disciplines and showing that art and design feed into and need each other,” explains Sergio Sancho about this new initiative.

The allies of CAN Ibiza Art Fair

Among the collaborators are Loewe Perfumes, Eivissa Cultura, Dipesa, Nikki Beach, Ksar Living, Cardenxe Sotol, Mezcal Amarás, Superbloom, Mahou, Match Tonic Water, and Ocean Drive Talamanca as the fair’s official hotel. About the founder and director of CAN, Sergio Sancho

Born in Madrid in 1978, Sergio Sancho is a key figure in the Spanish cultural scene. He left a promising career in advertising to pursue his passion for art, creating platforms that give space to contemporary creators and artistic languages that had little room in the Spanish market. In 2017, he founded Urvanity Art Fair in Madrid. Also known as UVNT, it has become one of the most important fairs during Madrid Art Week and an international reference. Sancho has also developed projects through Urvanity Projects for companies like Swatch, Ikea, Adidas, Iberia, Mahou, and Tuenti. With CAN, he revolutionized the international art scene with an unprecedented location (Ibiza) and a schedule outside the traditional calendar.

About the curator of CAN, Saša Bogojev

Born in Rijeka, Croatia (1978), Saša Bogojev lives and works in the Netherlands. Over the years, he has collaborated with various international publications, contributing to numerous artist books, magazines, and exhibition texts.
