5 churches in ibiza you should visit

Ibiza is much more than you imagine...
The island hides, among its hills, villages and squares, authentic architectural gems full of history.
Its churches, many of them fortified, are witnesses to the passing centuries and the daily life of generations of Ibicencos.
Today we invite you to discover five of the most emblematic temples of the White Island.
Church of Sant Miquel

At the top of Puig de Sant Miquel stands one of the oldest and most unique fortress-churches in Ibiza.
Built between the 13th and 14th centuries on an old Arab farmhouse, it stands out for its cross-shaped floor plan, unique on the island. Its main nave has six chapels and a rectangular portico that leads to a large courtyard where ball pagès, the traditional Ibicenco dance, is performed every summer.
Its thick and robust walls remind us that it also served as a refuge against pirate attacks.
Inside, you can find frescoes, 19th-century decorative friezes and side chapels such as the one of Benirràs, adorned with beautiful religious paintings.
Sant Miquel is a place where spirituality, popular culture and history live in perfect harmony.
Church of Sant Antoni

Located next to the port, the Church of Sant Antoni marks the heart of the town that bears its name. Construction began in the 14th century and it reached its current appearance in the 17th century.
It is a clear example of a fortress-church: thick walls, defensive tower, few windows and even cannons installed on its roof to repel corsair attacks.
Inside, a freshwater well guaranteed the survival of those who took refuge there.
The temple, almost completely whitewashed, has a beautiful exterior patio and an interior atrium, around which much of the town’s social and commercial life is still organized today.
Puig de Missa of Santa Eulària

On a hill overlooking the town of Santa Eulària rises the Puig de Missa complex, declared a Site of Cultural Interest.
The church, inaugurated in 1568, was originally conceived as a vicarage and soon became an imposing spiritual and defensive fortress.
Over the centuries, chapels, porches and a 17th-century baroque altarpiece were added, today restored and dedicated to Santa Eulària.
The setting is especially picturesque: whitewashed streets, traditional farmhouses and spectacular views of the Santa Eulària river.
The complex also houses the Barrau House-Museum and the Ethnographic Museum of Can Ros, making the visit a complete cultural journey through Ibiza’s history and traditions.
Church of Santo Domingo (Sant Pere)

In the very heart of Dalt Vila stands the church of the former convent of Santo Domingo, today the parish of Sant Pere.
Erected in the 17th century, it is the second largest temple on the island, only after the Cathedral of Santa Maria. Its interior impresses with its spaciousness and the ornamentation of its eleven side chapels, topped on the outside by tiled domes in the Valencian style.
The baroque altarpiece of the main altar, carved in Genoa, features a central figure of Saint Vincent Ferrer, while the main vault is decorated with frescoes painted by Vicenç Matas in 1884.
The chapel of Sant Crist del Cementeri is one of the most venerated by Ibicencos. The adjoining convent, built around a cloister, today houses the Ibiza Town Hall.
Church of Sant Jordi

The Church of Sant Jordi, built in the 15th century by the peasants of the Ses Salines plain, is another fortified jewel of Ibiza.
Its purpose was twofold: to serve as a refuge and a place of prayer for those who worked in the salt flats, a constant target for Berber pirate raids.
With a square floor plan and crowned by battlements, it was armed with artillery until the 19th century.
Inside, its single nave with side chapels has been modified over time, and in 1990 a new altarpiece was installed at the main altar, composed of historical fragments.
Today, Sant Jordi preserves better than any other church on the island its original defensive character, with solid walls and the appearance of a fortress.
